POULENC Stabat Mater
POULENC Final Scene from Dialogues of the Carmelites
Women feel the pain of sacrifice. In Poulenc’s Stabat Mater, the Virgin Mary stays with her son until the bitter end. In the face of the French Revolution, a group of Carmelite nuns refuses to renounce their beliefs. On the other side of the same revolution, Beethoven’s fervor stokes a fire that burns brightly in his Fifth Symphony.
