Emerging conductor Ruth Reinhardt makes her SLSO debut in a program that burns with radiance. Warmth emanates from Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler Symphony, a statement of defiance in troubled times. Longing sings through the unforgettable melodies of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, performed by rising star Andrei Ioniță. Soulful darkness touches the SLSO’s strings in Bacewicz’s long-forgotten Concerto for Strings.

A few things to know:
  • “The Dvořák is the greatest cello concerto," says the Romanian cellist Andrei Ioniță, “It takes advantage of the singing quality of the cello.” Ioniță began playing the cello at age five, and “from the very first lesson, I knew it would become my voice.”
  • Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz is “a fantastic composer,” says conductor Ruth Reinhardt, “but so underrated—when she died in the late 60s her music just started to disappear. Her music is excellent. It has this eastern European soulful darkness but can also be so full of fun and wit.”
  • Conductor Ruth Reinhardt is committed to lifting up women composers of the second half of the 20th century and early 21st century. She brings new names and fresh faces to many orchestras and audiences for the first time.
