Emerging conductor Ruth Reinhardt makes her SLSO debut in a program that burns with radiance. Warmth emanates from Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler Symphony, a statement of defiance in troubled times. Longing sings through the unforgettable melodies of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, performed by rising star Andrei Ioniță. Soulful darkness touches the SLSO’s strings in Bacewicz’s long-forgotten Concerto for Strings.

“The Dvořák is the greatest cello concerto," says the Romanian cellist Andrei Ioniță, “It takes advantage of the singing quality of the cello.” Ioniță began playing the cello at age five, and “from the very first lesson, I knew it would become my voice.”

Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz is “a fantastic composer,” says conductor Ruth Reinhardt, “but so underrated—when she died in the late 60s her music just started to disappear. Her music is excellent. It has this eastern European soulful darkness but can also be so full of fun and wit.”
