A few things to know:
  • John Powell has scored some of the most beloved animated films of recent years. In addition to How to Train Your Dragon, he also composed the scores for several other DreamWorks films including Chicken Run, Shrek, and Kung Fu Panda
  • To create the musical atmosphere for the Viking village of Berk in the film, Powell utilized traditions from northern Europe, including Scottish bagpipes and Irish penny whistles. The film’s original song, “Sticks & Stones,” was written and performed by Icelandic singer Jónsi
  • Powell studied Scandinavian composers for inspiration, particularly Jean Sibelius, to achieve a full symphonic sound that would fit into the context of a film. "I was certainly trying to get a bit more epic,” he said. “I just felt the animation and the visuals were giving me a broader palette to play with.”
