We welcome acclaimed violinist Augustin Hadelich and rising star conductor Tabita Berglund for this celebration of the music, architecture, and nature of Nordic countries. Called “one of the most exciting violinists of his generation” by The New York Times, Hadelich shines in a performance of Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto, and the orchestra sets off on a journey through the countryside in Sibelius’ sweeping Second Symphony. This performance takes place within the newly renovated Powell Hall, whose expansion was designed by the Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta and was inspired by the elegant shapes of orchestral instruments.
A few things to know:
- Tabita Berglund was named the Principal Guest Conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for the 24/25 season and begins a new role as Principal Guest Conductor for Dresdner Philharmonie in the 25/26 season.
- In his most recent visit to St. Louis, Augustin Hadelich showcased his “stunning precision” and “intense emotional commitment” (KDHX) in a performance of Barber’s Violin Concerto, conducted by Music Director Stéphane Denève.
- The Ballad of Revolt, by Norwegian composer Harald Sæverud, was written during World War II as an act of musical resistance. He dedicated the piece to heroes of the war.
- The curves of stringed instruments, light reflecting off brass, and the rich colors of woodwinds all inspired the sweeping movements of Powell Hall’s expansion.
