Pianist Joyce Yang’s interpretation of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is sure to ignite sparks of energy across Powell Hall in this spirited Thanksgiving weekend event, which also features conductor Kevin John Edusei’s SLSO debut. Yang has impressed audiences all over the globe, with reviewers applauding her “tremendous power” (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) and “impeccable technique” (TheaterJones).
A few things to know:
- Richard Wagner praised Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony for its exceptional dance rhythms and character, calling the piece “the apotheosis of dance.”
- Bartók’s Dance Suite came to life when the city council of Budapest commissioned him and two of his contemporaries, Ernö Dohnányi and Zoltán Kodály, to compose music for a grand concert in celebration of the city’s 50th anniversary.
- A performance by the Nederlands Dans Theater, set to music by Philip Glass, inspired Joyce Yang in a way that she says “completely changed the way I thought about my own art.” It led her to connect with the Santa Fe Ballet more than a decade ago and start to explore unique collaborations with dancers and visual artists.
