The SLSO and Saint Louis Dance Theatre come together in this exquisite, adventurous collaboration to imagine Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite in an entirely new way. As Stravinsky worked on pieces like "Dumbarton Oaks" and Pulcinella, he toyed with the idea of disequilibrium and showcased his quirkiness and creativity with unconventional musical characters. Ballet music from Claude Debussy and Albert Roussel completes a program that celebrates powerful partnerships between dance and music.
A few things to know:
- Now an important Harvard University research institute, library, and expansive outdoor space, Dumbarton Oaks was at one time the home of U.S. diplomat Robert Bliss and his wife Mildred, who were great admirers and financial supporters of Igor Stravinsky.
- Many other composers—including Aaron Copland, Joan Tower, and Caroline Shaw—have created new music inspired by the Dumbarton Oaks estate’s gardens and legacy, thanks to an ongoing commissioning initiative run by the Friends of Music at Dumbarton Oaks.
- Kirven Douthit-Boyd, choreographer and artistic director of the Saint Louis Dance Theatre, was a member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for 11 years before taking up his current role in Saint Louis.
