W.A. Mozart The Magic Flute
“I’m always in awe of Mozart. There is no one like him,” said Music Director Stéphane Denève, whose earlier experiences conducting opera forever impacted his appreciation for Mozart’s brilliant musical mind. The Magic Flute introduces a cast of unforgettable characters, including the villainous Queen of the Night and the quirky, yet relatable Papageno, in a story that blends fairy tale and philosophy. One of Mozart’s most brilliant orchestral scores, this magnificent, extravagant opera-in-concert production combines the talents of the SLSO, a cast of acclaimed vocalists, and the “impeccable” (KDHX) St. Louis Symphony Chorus.
A few things to know:
- In the second half of The Magic Flute, the vengeful Queen of the Night sings one of the most recognizable, and most challenging, arias in all of opera, requiring extraordinary vocal acrobatics. Rainelle Krause’s performances of the role been have praised by Opera Magazine as “formidable…a ‘bright, ringing coloratura,’” and the Guardian has dubbed her voice “diamantine.”
- The Magic Flute was Mozart’s final opera. He conducted the premiere performance in September 1791 and died just two months after, at age 35.
- The SLSO has presented several opera-in-concert productions in recent seasons, including Mascagni’s Cavelleria Rusticana, Verdi’s Aida, Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, and Britten’s Peter Grimes.
