A Celebration of Hip Hop - Featuring DMC and the Sugarhill Gang

Description

đź“Ť This concert takes place at Stifel Theatre

Throw your hands in the air as hip-hop legends DMC and the Sugarhill Gang join the SLSO on stage to share some of their greatest hits. From Run-DMC’s “It’s Tricky,” and “Walk this Way” to the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” and “Apache,” driving rhythms and rapid-fire rhymes join with lush, orchestral melodies in this unique and exciting musical collaboration.

A few things to know:
  • One of the most influential acts in the history of hip hop, Run-DMC was formed in 1983 by Joseph “Run” Simmons, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, and Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell. The trio became the first hip hop group to win a gold record, paving the way for mainstream acceptance of the new musical genre. From the first rap group to grace the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine to the first to appear on MTV, they helped changed music, culture, fashion, and language—and made American history.
  • In 2009, DMC was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2016 he received the Recording Academy’s Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In recent years, DMC has worked to support children in foster care and raise awareness about mental health, including his critically acclaimed memoir, Ten Ways Not to Commit Suicide.
  • The Sugarhill Gang is best known for their 1979 hit "Rapper's Delight,” the first rap single to reach the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 list. The song’s opening—"I say a hip hop, hibbit to the hibbit to the hip-hip-hop and you don't stop"—gave a name and identity to the new and growing movement.
