A few things to know:
- Three works here draw inspiration from birds. Benjamin Britten’s work highlights birds of spring. Maurice Ravel’s Trois beaux oiseaux du Paradis, composed during WWI, connects three different birds to memories of a loved one at war. Kevin Puts’ work is inspired by Fleda Brown’s poem, “If I Were A Swan,” imagining its central subject “gliding over the calm, inland-lake waters of northern Michigan,” according to Puts.
- Reena Esmail’s When the Violin combines western choral music with classical Hindustani musical conventions for a 12-part chorus, four vocal soloists, and solo cello.
- Already the recipient of a 2023 Grammy Award and the 2012 Pulitzer Prize in music, Kevin Puts was also recently named Musical America’s Composer of the Year for 2024.
