Join the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra for a one-night-only performance that celebrates the creative genius of jazz legend John Coltrane. Experience lush orchestrations of Coltrane’s popular and groundbreaking works, from his early Prestige Recording years to his late 1960s masterpieces. Curated and arranged by genre-defying composer Carlos Simon, this unique concert experience journeys through the life and legacy of one of music history’s most influential artists. For one night, the legend lives.
A few things to know:
- John Coltrane was known for his lightning-fast, virtuosic playing. His ability to produce rapid, complex lines on the saxophone became one of his trademarks.
- Coltrane was instrumental in developing and popularizing several important innovations in jazz, including modal jazz (in collaboration with Miles Davis) and the concept of “sheets of sound,” a technique where he played fast, cascading chords or notes in dense, fluid patterns.
- Carlos Simon’s Double Concerto will be performed in the SLSO's April 10-12 program, Mahler’s Fifth: Landscapes of Emotion, with soloists Hilary Hahn and Seth Parker Woods. Simon is currently the composer-in-residence for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the inaugural Boston Symphony Orchestra Composer Chair.
