Herbert Stothart The Wizard of Oz
The timeless 1939 film classic The Wizard of Oz returns to the big screen with the SLSO performing Herbert Stothart’s iconic score live. Join Dorothy and her friends as she follows the Yellow Brick Road to Oz and faces the Wicked Witch of the West. Sing along to the music you love, and the songs you know by heart—from “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” to “The Merry Old Land of Oz”—at this truly Technicolor event at Powell Hall.
A few things to know:
- The beloved song “Over the Rainbow” was almost removed from the movie due to concerns that it might slow down the pacing. Fortunately, composer Harold Arlen and lyricist E.Y. Harburg persuaded the producers to keep it, and it went on to become one of the most famous songs in film history. “Over The Rainbow” won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1939.
- Herbert Stothart began his career with producer Arthur Hammerstein as a musical director for touring companies of Broadway shows. He soon began composing music for Oscar Hammerstein II, the producer's nephew. Over the course of his life, he was nominated for twelve Academy Awards and won Best Original Score for The Wizard of Oz.
- Arlen and Harburg created the music for the entire film in about six weeks. Despite the tight timeline, the songs have become timeless classics.
