Grab your lederhosen, practice your best Maria von Trapp impression and get ready to enjoy Rodgers & Hammerstein's The Sound of Music Sing-A-Long. Join us for a screening of the smash-hit 1965 movie musical in glorious, full-screen technicolor, complete with onscreen lyrics. Based on the amazing true story of The Trapp Family Singers, The Sound of Music is a cinematic landmark and winner of five Academy Awards®, including Best Picture. Starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, the film features timeless songs by Rodgers & Hammerstein including "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi," "Edelweiss,” "Climb Ev'ry Mountain” and more.
Before the film begins, you’ll test your knowledge with movie trivia and learn how to participate throughout the screening using your complimentary tote bag filled with interactive surprises. Costumes are not obligatory but highly recommended!
A few things to know:
- Although "Edelweiss" sounds like a traditional Austrian folk song, it was written specifically for the musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. It turned out to be the last song they ever composed together.
- The title song was almost cut from the film, as producers feared it slowed down the start of the action. Luckily, it stayed—and Julie Andrews’ sweeping performance in the mountains became one of the most iconic scenes in movie history.
- To portray her character authentically, Julie Andrews took guitar lessons, despite some frustrations with the instrument. The scene with Maria singing “Do-Re-Mi,” among others, features her playing.
Note: The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra does not perform at this concert.
