Rihards Zaļupe Flow
Experience the Oscar-winning animated masterpiece Flow while the SLSO performs Rihards Zaļupe’s haunting, atmospheric score live. Visionary director Gints Zilbalodis’ gorgeously animated film unfolds as a poetic, dialogue-free journey through a post-apocalyptic world shaped by water. At its center is a solitary cat whose encounters with other animals and the remnants of a lost civilization forge moments of resilience and connection. With breathtaking visuals and a meditative pace, Flow in Concert offers an immersive evening of quiet wonder and cinematic beauty.
A few things to know:
- Flow premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and went on to win several awards, including Best Animated Feature at the 2025 Academy Awards and 2024 Golden Globe Awards. The film was especially notable for being the first Latvian movie to be nominated for and win an Academy Award.
- Award-winning composer, producer, and percussionist Rihards Zaļupe has composed music for several internationally recognized films such as Flow (2024), The Pagan King (2018), and 1906 (2019). In addition to his composition work, Zaļupe has been a percussionist with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra for over 15 years, contributing to his extensive classical music background.
- The film features no dialogue as it follows a cat who encounters and travels with a crew of unexpected animals—including a dog, a lemur, a capybara, and a secretarybird—in a seemingly post-apocalyptic world. The characters communicate solely through animal sounds, movement, and presence, without human language or names.
