W.A. Mozart Amadeus in Concert

Experience Miloš Forman’s Academy Award-winning phenomenon Amadeus while the SLSO and St. Louis Symphony Chorus perform Mozart’s most celebrated works live to picture. This sumptuous period epic tells the gripping tale of Vienna court composer Antonio Salieri and his rivalry with the brilliant young composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Salieri’s envy fuels his plot to destroy the man, all while being unable to tear himself away from the genius of Mozart’s music. Brought to life by the SLSO, Amadeus in Concert is a soaring celebration of astonishing musical achievement.

Please note: the SLSO will present the original PG theatrical release of Amadeus shown with English subtitles.

A few things to know:

  • The film’s score is composed almost entirely from Mozart’s prolific body of work, including symphonies, concertos, serenades, and operas. The soundtrack was conducted by Sir Neville Marriner, leading the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.
  • The film won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (F. Murray Abraham as Salieri), and Best Screenplay. The film's soundtrack won the Grammy Award for Best Classical Album in 1984.
  • Amadeus prominently features Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute, which premiered in Vienna on September 30, 1791. Unlike many of Mozart’s operas that were written for aristocratic audiences, The Magic Flute was a Singspiel—a form of German opera that mixes singing with spoken dialogue—aimed at the general public. Join us for the SLSO’s production of The Magic Flute: Opera in Concert on Friday, February 20, and Sunday, February 22, at Powell Hall.

Amadeus in Concert is a production of Avex Classics International. The Amadeus film is licensed by The Saul Zaentz Company.
